South African Naval Museum

The South African Naval Museum, located in Simon’s Town, Cape Town, offers a comprehensive exploration of South Africa’s naval history. Housed in the historic Mast House and Sail Loft, constructed in 1815, the museum showcases the evolution of the South African Navy from its inception in 1922 through its roles in both World Wars and its transformation in the post-apartheid era. Exhibits include detailed displays on naval warfare, hydrography, diving, and the contributions of the SA Marines. A notable feature is the SAS Assegaai, a preserved Daphné-class submarine that served from 1971 to 2003 and now functions as a museum ship, offering visitors an immersive experience into submarine life.
