Chapman’s Peak Drive, affectionately known as “Chappies,” is a breathtaking 9-kilometer coastal road that winds along the Atlantic coastline between Hout Bay and Noordhoek in Cape Town. Carved into the rugged cliffs of Chapman’s Peak mountain, this engineering marvel features 114 curves, offering panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes.

The drive was officially opened in 1922, following a challenging construction period that began in 1915. Engineers utilized the hard Cape Granite contour as the foundation, carving the roadway into the softer Malmesbury sediments of the cliffs. Over the years, the road has faced closures due to rockfalls and adverse weather conditions. Extensive safety measures, including rockfall shelters and catch fences, have been implemented to ensure the safety of travelers.

Today, Chapman’s Peak Drive is a toll road celebrated for its scenic beauty, attracting tourists and locals alike.
